ADIDAS SS14 PREVIEWS PART 1 | RICK OWENS, RAF SIMONS, Y3 & STAN SMITH |
We recently went down to the Adidas Spring Summer 2014 press day to check out what one of our favourite brands has to offer us for next year.
First up I’m going to give you some info on the up coming SS14 RICK OWENS collabs. I know these aren’t to everybody’s taste but innovative design deserves acknowledgement. Then another quirky designer – Raf Simons followed by Y3 and to finish Stan Smith is back to bring us a classic iconic trainer reissue for 2014. Hope you enjoy!
RICK OWENS X ADIDAS SS14
As an avent-garde fashion designer, Rick Owens is well known for his minimalist, architectural approach to design. This season sees Adidas’ breakthrough technology combined with Owens innovative design to bring a mens and womens’ footwear range unlike any other.
Distilled silhouettes that glide as one piece of design, with no compromise for sections. They are no areas, they is one area; a trainer, of minimal design. The collection is composed of leather and nylon mixing in colours of black, white, grey, pearl and bone. Owens states that the idea behind the collection came from his personal design for chic sneakers to motivate his cardio efforts.
Branding is increasingly minimal with Owens Adidas collaborations and within this collection the only trace are barely perceptible three-stripe perforations along the sides of the trainers.
Retail prices start at 400-500 EUR.
RAF SIMONS X ADIDAS SS14
Raf Simons is collaborating with Adidas for SS14 to create a UNISEX footwear range. The words we always like to hear; unisex!
The collection includes 8 unisex models in upto 4 colourways for a total of 21 unique designs. Each draws on a playful, comic book aesthetic that features exaggerated shapes and Lego like colours and favours velcro closures over usual lacing. Nylon, leather, sport mesh, and embroidered textiles can be seen throughout the collection, making it very texturally varied. Branding is dependent on the style of shoe and both Performance and Originals logos can be seen alongside the iconic three-stripe motif featured on some models.
Retail prices start at 270-350 EUR.
Y3 BY ADIDAS SS14
Peter Saville is the current art director at Y3 and this season sees him getting graphic with hyper-colourful designs from a collection inspired by digital noise and names ‘MEANINGLESS EXCITEMENT.’ A critic and celebration of Internet culture and persuit of the next big thing!
Famous for album artwork for bands like Joy Division, New Order and Suede, Saville found his inspiration for this collection by surfing the web. Culling images and words from online forums, social media and personal blogging platforms he then cropped and warped these ideas and merged them through classically American styles deconstructed through Japanese tailoring.
An exciting footwear collection has been born for SS14 across womens’ heals, mens sneakers and shoes. A car crash of styles blending elements of futurism and handcraft can be seen. The sneaker variety, silhouettes and colour ways make for one of the most interesting, style driven Y3 collections to date; in my opinion.
STAN SMITH BY ADIDAS SS14
Tennis shoes are making a massive come back in 2014 and Stan Smith is leading the way. Adidas are reissuing the trainer for SS14 in a classic, true to form historical way. Nothing much is changing with the reissue, theres no worry of a horrible hibrid just a classic shoe back on the market with a big campaign push!
It’s nice to see a change from bubble soles and running shoes, how ever much I like them it’s always good to know fashions are changing, even if it’s going back in time!
Since its debut as a tennis shoe, the Stan Smith has made its way from the tennis court to the street, becoming adidas’ best selling shoe of all time, with over 40 million pairs sold. American tennis icon Stan Smith began wearing what was the world’s first ever leather tennis shoe in 1971, when he won the US Open on grass and the Davis Cup on clay with the American team.
Get ready to get back involved with a classic icon.
January 2014 will see the first drop followed by a second in April 2014.
We will have a further 3 blog posts for you from ADIDAS including OPENING CEREMONY, STELLA MCCARTNEY and ADIDAS ORIGINALS.
